BACK IT UP | SLIDE TO THE FRONT
Hey all. I am SO SORRY I've been MIA this week, classes at school have not allowed for much messing around in the past few days. It's not that we've gotten crazily busy, but we've just been constantly doing something. If you want to talk to me while I'm here, you can get on GoogleChat or on the Facebook messenger, those ones get through the connection here and I'm always on GoogleChat.
I need to catch up on LJ games so bad, I apologize to those I'm in games with. I need to friend all the new MM people, and WAFY!Shinji has been begging to play. I've just been so tired when I get home that all I want to do is play Flash games and fiddle with my music. Speaking of which, I should post to
blessingoflove as well. D:
Congrats to Tokio Hotel for winning Best New Artist at the VMAs, I know there are some big TH fans on my f-list. The awards were pretty much a joke, and usually are nowadays (even my girl xtina stooped to lip-synching, but at such a farce of a show I'm not really too upset about it). Lupe Fiasco didn't even get on the main stage and there's no video of his full performance, which pisses me off. Kanye was pretty good though; he and P!nk were the performance highlights (she rocked it with a broken rib, you go girl). As for Russell Brand, I love this man to death and he's one of my favorite British tv personalities/improv comedians, so it was a huge disappointment to me that he didn't have such a great show the other night. I was hoping he could make a big positive impact on the US crowd, but the fact that he was a little off his game plus a big chunk of the audience (and the viewing audience) not being ready for his forward humor made for somewhat of a flop. Don't worry Russell, I still love you! And Jordin Sparks (along with all those Disney kids) can eat a cock.
As for Britney, it was good to see her look a little classy again. Out of favoritism I wanted Mariah to win Best Female Video (plus that video was lolz), but she has enough awards to last her a lifetime already. Even if those awards were full of shit, it's not too bad that Britney won them. She needs some good publicity. Yeah, I know, half of you are probably wondering when I turned into a big fucking Britney fan, but she's been in the media almost as long as I can remember and she's not evil or anything, so it's hard not to root for her when her life is such a trainwreck.
In other news, do I speak for all queer women everywhere when I say that Katy Perry should fall off the face of the known Earth? Jesus christ.

I may be bi, but I do like the I Kissed A Girl song....guilty pleasure much??? ._.;;
As long as you feel guilty about it, I guess I can forgive you. |D
ALSO. I haven't made out with someone with chapstick. But any dude I've ever known has said that they HATE it when their girlfriends are wearing chapstick anyway.
Katy Perry is just... 200% fail.
Whenever I read Katy Perry, my brain reads it as Kerry first. And I think that all of a sudden I'm in the past.
I can't even speak for one queer woman anywhere, but re: Kay Perry--I actually liked I Kissed a Girl when I first heard it (catchy and sorta relevant to queer culture, yes plz!) but then the more I heard it--and I heard it CONSTANTLY, in casual dining joints and stores--the more loathsome it got. I mean, the fact that it was clearly cashing in on the whole "I'm definitely a hetero girl so don't worry (I HAS BOYFRIEND), but I'm happy to make out with another girl because it's hot, but still sexually unthreatening" had not escaped me. The fact that it (and by extension its message) had gotten so damn popular and mainstream was what really kicked home how insulting it was.
It also turns my stomach a little to think of how this song's prevalence might be affecting the straight club scene. Hetero girl-on-girl-chic gets an anthem. *facepalm* I will eat my words when a song celebrating fake!queer-dude action or a song about actual gay attraction gets this much fame and notoriety.
In any case, you've hit the nail right on the head when you talk about the fact that the absurd popularity of the song, more than anything else, is what makes it so disgusting. The lyrics are just plain insulting (again, like you said, the most insulting thing is how non-threatening and flippant girl-on-girl action appears in regards to the boyfriend in the song and in the eyes of the listening audience). I think guy-on-guy action is virtually always perceived as threatening, and while a shit-ton of us would go nuts over a guy version of this song, I really doubt there could be any kind of flippant "lol hope my gf doesn't mind" lyrics involved, or it would just seem bizarre.
... I got distracted and now I have no idea where I was going with this comment. tl;dr I FUCKING AGREE!
I like to think that someone, somewhere, in the wake of this Katy Perry atrocity, is constructing an answer to that song. Either, "I kissed a girl and I liked it because HI I ACTUALLY LIKE GIRLS, SORRY GUYS NO YOU CAN'T JOIN IN OR WATCH," or a gender-flipped version of Perry's song*, or song that treats male sexuality/objectification with the same easy flippancy. Guy-on-guy is perceived as threatening because male sexuality in general is perceived as threatening and/or srs bzns, and female sexuality as passive -_-
You know what, I also hate the constant reassurance Perry keeps giving the audience throughout the song. It's not enough that we know she has a boyfriend (and where was HE when this supposed girl-on-girl kiss happened? did he care?) but she has to keep pointing out that no, it's not like she could be in love with her or anything (which few people would assume of a total stranger, but the fact that it needed saying is pretty gross). THIS IS WHY apparently people still don't think a girl/girl affair is cheating on the boyfriend! I'm not kidding, someone who I thought was fairly level headed and self-proclaimed gay-friendly was like, "Well, it doesn't even count though, right? She wasn't cheating on him, it wasn't with a guy!" And then the screams ensued... I'm not laying the blame for this social condition at Perry's feet, obviously, but she sure isn't doing shit to keep it down.
Incidentally, I was watching the news on LOGO, and evidently "I Kissed a Girl" has marked a boom in business for bisexual clubs for girls or.. something. I don't even know how to feel about that.
* For some reason I was put in mind of Franz Ferdinand's "Michael", only I'm still not entirely certain I understand what was going on in that one except that it, I think, at least genuinely dealt with queer culture (I'm unclear), and it's not like that song ever got the kind of play Perry's song has gotten.
.... I got distracted too. tl;dr FUCK YEAH.
Was already uncomfortable with the Katy Perry song, but expected the video to be a, "I kissed a girl. I liked it but I shouldn't have. I'm in denial. After much thought, boyfriend, I'm breaking up with you and dyking it out with my new lady." This was the scenario in my head every time I listened to the song. Utterly crushed. Fuck you, Katy Perry. I wanted a tender, hot make-out and you gave me a bunch of chicks posing and touching themselves in ways not erotic. :(
I dicked a dude. And I liked it.
